Welcome To Historic KRAPville!

In the spring of 1804, when Meriwether Lewis and William Clark set out to explore the vast Louisiana Purchase, few people remember that one of their earliest and most important stops was the humble riverside settlement now known as KRAPville. Resting on the north bank of the Missouri River, directly across from modern-day Washington, the area offered rich timber, fresh water, and a commanding view of the frontier.

The Corps of Discovery stayed there several nights, repairing gear, organizing supplies, and preparing themselves for the long unknown journey westward. Yet their greatest contribution to the future city was not a map, nor a speech, nor a flag—it was a massive and carefully dug latrine, constructed with military precision and frontier determination. Legend says Clark himself supervised the dimensions, while Lewis praised its “excellent drainage and uncommon convenience.”
